Prepare for Home Dialysis

Preparing for Home Dialysis: Ensuring a Smooth Transition

At Home Dialysis Centers, we aim to make your transition to home dialysis as seamless as possible. Whether you choose hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis, preparing adequately is crucial for a successful home dialysis experience. Here’s what you need to know and do to get started.

Assessment and Suitability

Meet with your nephrologist to discuss the feasibility of home dialysis based on your medical condition, home environment, and personal preferences. Our technical director will visit your home to evaluate the space, ensuring it meets the requirements for safe and effective dialysis.

Training and Education

Comprehensive training sessions are provided for you and, if applicable, your caregiver.

Prior to beginning home hemodialysis (HD), you will be required to train 4 to 6 weeks with a home hemodialysis training nurse. If you chose to train with a caregiver, they will be required to train with you. The majority of patients will do home HD with a partner.

If you have chosen assisted in-home hemodialysis (AHD), a hemodialysis patient care technician (PCT) will be assigned to you and will come to your home and administer your dialysis treatment. With AHD, no patient or caregiver training is required. However, to determine if you qualify for AHD, a member of our home team will call you to discuss this option with you.

Our training sessions cover everything from machine operation to emergency procedures. We also provide detailed educational materials to help you understand your treatment and manage your health effectively – including how to set up and store your medical equipment.

Home Preparation

You’ll need a clean, well-lit area with access to water, power, and a sanitary drainage system. No pets should be allowed in the treatment area during connecting or disconnecting your catheter – you are more prone to germs and bacteria carried by pets. We’ll guide you through the setup process for your dialysis system, including any necessary modifications to your home. Our team will also install all necessary dialysis equipment and ensure it is operating correctly before you begin your treatments at home.

Storage Space Tips

Enjoy Ongoing Support for Your Concierge Dialysis
